AIDS/Lifecycle Cyclist Tony Eason Podcast about ALC Event.

At the age of 32, a friend suggested,  “sit in the nude & stare into a mirror.”  So, I did. And after staring (for 10 minutes) at my face, arms, stomach, eyes, feet and legs, I realized the mirror reflection did not match up with the words pouring out of my mouth.

So, in 1994, I put down the cocaine; stopped hanging out at “The Endup”; quit drowning in vanity; and became a positive addition to humanity by participating in California AIDS Ride #2 [supporting the efforts of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation]. The 545 mile bike experience changed my life while assisting in relieving the suffering of others.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SAN FRANCISCO, CA / LOS ANGELES, CA

San Francisco Iyengar Yoga instructor, marathon runner, and endurance cyclist Tony Eason has reached a historic milestone by completing twenty 545-mile charity bicycle rides from San Francisco to Los Angeles. Spanning back to his participation in the original California AIDS Ride Tanqueray #2 in 1994, Eason’s 20-year commitment has raised over $64,000 to support HIV/AIDS awareness, education, and healthcare services provided by the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the Los Angeles LGBT Center.

Overcoming Addiction and Finding Purpose

Eason credits his initial 545-mile ride in 1994 as a turning point that saved his life. Struggling with a severe cocaine addiction and a destructive lifestyle, Eason turned to road cycling as a pathway toward recovery, sobriety, and personal transformation. What began as a personal effort to reclaim his life evolved into a two-decade-long journey of athlete advocacy, community action, and mutual aid on wheels.
“When I first clipped into my pedals in 1994, I was trying to overcome my addiction and find a reason to live,” said Eason. “Along those 545 miles down the California coastline, I found sobriety, a profound sense of community, and a lifelong mission. Cycling for those living with HIV/AIDS taught me that personal healing and serving others go hand in hand.”

Final Ride: “Two Bikes & A Driver” & 7-Day Route Breakdown

Marking his 20th and final 545-mile journey from San Francisco to Los Angeles, Eason logged his milestone event titled “Two Bikes & A Driver”. Navigating the California coastline one last time, Eason mapped out the full 7-day coastal route map, traversing key elevation shifts and daily mileage targets:
  • Day 1 (San Francisco to Santa Cruz): ~82 miles along Highway 1, exiting the Bay Area via Pacifica and Half Moon Bay.
  • Day 2 (Santa Cruz to King City): ~109 miles cutting through the agricultural heartland of the Salinas Valley.
  • Day 3 (King City to Paso Robles): ~74 miles featuring steady inland climbs and coastal range foothills.
  • Day 4 (Paso Robles to Santa Maria): ~61 miles rolling through wine country and Central Coast valleys.
  • Day 5 (Santa Maria to Lompoc): ~43 miles navigating coastal hills and agricultural highways.
  • Day 6 (Lompoc to Ventura): ~85 miles passing through Santa Barbara along coastal flats.
  • Day 7 (Ventura to Los Angeles): ~60 miles hugging the Pacific coastline through Malibu before finishing in downtown LA.

Grassroots Fundraising, Corporate Partnerships & Media Campaigns

Over his two-decade commitment, Eason’s fundraising milestones were built through innovative community partnerships and public campaigns documented across his platforms at ynottony.com and ynottony1.blogspot.com:
  • Fat Tire Beer & New Belgium Brewing: Benefiting from long-term sponsorship by New Belgium Brewing Company (Ed Dopman & Jamie Mastin), which hosted (15) annual “Fat Tire Beer Bust” community fundraisers to help Eason exceed his mandatory fundraising thresholds.
  • National Media Outreach Campaign: Launching a dedicated press release campaign targeted at Oprah Winfreyand Harpo Studios, inviting national television coverage to elevate visibility for HIV/AIDS care and volunteer road crews.
  • Fellow Cyclists & Support Techs: Riding alongside dedicated co-participants such as David Sears, Bruce Bellamy, Ramon Bastic, Julie Brown, Andrew Fort, Chris McLean, “The Chicken Lady,” Ginger Brûlée, “The Angels” – Lenore Cymes & Irene Kelly, Ian Griffith, SF Dave, Joel Sale, Jen Moore, Joe Arenaz, Edna Flores, Bob Katz, “The Cookie Lady,” Barry Elliot, Bill Smulin, Michael Bracco, Raybel L. Ramos, and Christopher Watros, while receiving essential mechanical backing from Cannondale, Trek, Mike’s Bikes (Sausalito), and mobile road technicians.

Integrating Yoga and Athletic Longevity

A graduate of the Two-Year Advanced Teacher Training Program at the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco and an apprentice to Senior Iyengar Teacher Janet MacLeod, Eason relies on over two decades of Hatha Yoga instruction to sustain his physical endurance. Across more than 10,900 cumulative miles cycled between SF and LA, Eason applied Iyengar-based alignment principles, breath work (pranayama), and recovery techniques to maintain joint health and stamina.
