The estimated lifetime risk of becoming infected with HIV is 1 in 16 for black males, and 1 in 30 for black females, a far higher risk than for white males (1 in 104) and white females (1 in 588).2 In Washington D.C, which has the nation\u2019s highest district HIV prevalence (3%), 76 % of those infected are African American. 3 According to the National HIV\/AIDS Strategy, African Americans &#8220;comprise the greatest proportion of HIV\/AIDS cases across many transmission categories, including among women, heterosexual men, injection drug users, and infants.&#8221;4<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>So why are black Americans so disproportionately affected by AIDS in America and how do black Americans themselves view the epidemic? And what is being done to limit the number of new cases of AIDS being identified in clinics across the country? &#8211; <span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.avert.org\/hiv-african-americans.htm\">Avert.org<\/a><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>, <iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"360\" height=\"224\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/a4u25dphFWM?fs=1\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h1>Greater Than AIDS<\/h1>\n<p>Deciding Moments are everyday opportunities to take a stand against HIV &#8212; to be &#8220;greater than&#8221; the AIDS disease. Their goals were to increase the availability of culturally specific service providers to address the needs of African American people who were living with or at risk of HIV\/AIDS, and to empower communities to help themselves.&#8221;<\/i><\/p>\n<div><i><br \/><\/i><\/div>\n<div><i><br \/><\/i><br \/><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"425\" height=\"345\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/a_nMsFc9o34?fs=1\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 32px; font-weight: bold; \">AIDS Activist &#8211; Victor Mooney<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>&#8220;Africa to Brooklyn by rowboat.&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: normal; font-size: 16px; \"><i>&#8220;After seven years of preparation, Victor Mooney will make his third attempt to row five-thousand miles from Cape Verde to New York&#8217;s Brooklyn Bridge. He hopes this row will increase AIDS prevention and encourage HIV\/AIDS testing to care. Mooney has lost one brother to AIDS and has another battling the disease.<\/i><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><i>Prior to Victor&#8217;s row, he&#8217;ll visit South Africa, Botswana, Angola, Nigeria, Ghana and Senegal to promote HIV testing and prevention. Mooney&#8217;s ground logistics in Africa is being supported by U.S. Presidents Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief Office.
