{"id":6454,"date":"2014-09-19T21:21:00","date_gmt":"2014-09-19T21:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ynottony.com\/ynot\/bay-guardian-best-of-the-bay-yoga-teacher\/"},"modified":"2015-03-20T18:52:34","modified_gmt":"2015-03-20T18:52:34","slug":"bay-guardian-best-of-the-bay-yoga-teacher","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ynottony.com\/ynot\/bay-guardian-best-of-the-bay-yoga-teacher\/","title":{"rendered":"Bay Guardian | Best of the Bay Yoga Teacher"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ynottony.com\/ynot\/wp-content\/uploads\/Best-Yoga-Teacher1.jpg\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/ynottony.com\/ynot\/wp-content\/uploads\/Best-Yoga-Teacher1.jpg\" height=\"118\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>During my childhood my mother always said, &#8220;if you want something, then ask for it!&#8221;&nbsp; Therefore, I&#8217;m asking you to VOTE ME IN as &#8220;Best of the Bay, Yoga Instructor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Question: So what makes me so damn special? <\/p>\n<p>Answer: Nothing makes me special.&nbsp; All of us are unique and special individuals.&nbsp; However, someone is gonna win this title, so YNOT ME?.<\/p>\n<h3>AIDS\/Lifecycle | \u201cSeva\u201d- Selfless Service <\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"157\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RnsP67P73KI\" width=\"210\"><\/iframe> <\/p>\n<p>You see, in my youth,&nbsp; I was a cocaine addict and &#8220;party animal.&#8221;&nbsp; Yet in 1994, a light bulb turned on in my head.&nbsp;&nbsp; So, I bought a<b> <\/b>bike.<\/p>\n<p>I decided to use  physical activity as a way to regain my focus and make some life changes  while simultaneously being \u201cof service&#8221; to my immediate community.<\/p>\n<p>Soon later, I participated in a 545 mile, 7 day bike  journey from San Francisco to Los Angeles in the fight against the AIDS  Pandemic. Presently, I have completed seventeen, 545 mile bike journeys. [personally raising well over $70,000.00 in support of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation].<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfhog.com\/free-outdoor-yoga-ocean-beach-tony-eason\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"http:\/\/www.sfhog.com\/free-outdoor-yoga-ocean-beach-tony-eason\/\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/ynottony.com\/ynot\/wp-content\/uploads\/Beach-2BYoga-300x225.jpg\" height=\"240\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Donation Yoga &#8211; San Francisco<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Over 20 years ago, I first heard the word &#8220;yoga.&#8221;&nbsp; And the rumors I was hearing said, &#8221; it&#8217;s another cult.&#8221;&nbsp; My community of friend&#8217;s claimed that Yogis and Yoginis were &#8220;spiritual pimps.&#8221;&nbsp; So, I refrained from attending yoga classes.<\/p>\n<p>And then one day, a friend said &#8220;let&#8217;s go to a yoga class my treat! And afterward,&nbsp; I&#8217;ll take you out for lunch.&#8221; So, since it was a free yoga class,&nbsp; I went to the class.<\/p>\n<p>From that one experience, I grew to understand the benefits of Hatha Yoga. And for the next 4 years [5 days a week], I studied under Iyengar Yoga Institute Graduate, Yoga Teacher, Mary Friedland.&nbsp; After which, I studied under the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco Faculty Members [Jaki Nett, Nora Burnett, Kathy Alef, Ben Thomas, Patricia Layton, Madira Hines, and Tommie Jean Thomas].<\/p>\n<p>In 2002, after apprenticing with Iyengar Yoga Teacher, Janet MacLeod, I graduated from the<span style=\"color: black;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ynottony.com\/ynot\/yoga-classes\/yoga-teacher\/\" target=\"_blank\"> 2yr Advanced Teacher Training Program of the IYISF<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And then, I pondered over:<\/p>\n<p>Question: &#8220;How can I share the gift of yoga with others?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Answer: &#8220;Make it accessible to each and every individual regardless of physical disposition, race, sexual orientation, social status or economic status.<\/p>\n<p>And voila!<\/p>\n<p>I began to to teach donation yoga classes. I allowed individuals to &#8220;pay what they can afford&#8221;.&nbsp; I encouraged individuals to &#8220;do what they can do and be happy with what they can do.&#8221; And after 13 years of teaching, I still offer <span style=\"color: black;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ynottony.com\/ynot\/yoga-classes\/\" target=\"_blank\">yoga classes by donation<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Free Yoga &#8211; Sports Basement<\/h3>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ynottony.com\/ynot\/yoga\/sports-basement\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"http:\/\/ynottony.com\/ynot\/yoga\/sports-basement\/\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/ynottony.com\/ynot\/wp-content\/uploads\/Sports-Basement-225x300.jpg\" height=\"320\" width=\"240\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>In  November 2008, as I was looking at the \u201cGrotto\u201d (community space) of  Sports Basement San Francisco, another light bulb went on. &nbsp; And, I began to ponder over the  idea of using Sports Basement as a way to serve the yoga  community.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">So to  get the ball rolling, I began to teach <span style=\"color: black;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ynottony.com\/ynot\/yoga\/sports-basement\/\" target=\"_blank\">free yoga classes each Sunday at Sports Basement<\/a>. &nbsp;A month later, I organized the first yoga teacher  schedule; began the internet promotions; and then watched the yoga  students arrive.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">Since that time, the seed has blossomed. &nbsp;And, Sports Basement has applied my initial concept of&nbsp; <b>\u201cfree yoga\u201d<\/b> to all store locations.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"315\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4tJJVqn108g\" width=\"420\"><\/iframe> <\/p>\n<h3>&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #333333;\">A Yoga Teacher Teaches by Example<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">You see; Yoga is about controlling the cessations of the mind.&nbsp; The continuous practice of yoga removes the veil of ignorance.
