"This is a really awesome community service. Yoga is taught here every Sunday for free and the instructors are competent and aware of the fact that people of all skill levels are in this class. It is open to anyone, welcoming, and very uplifting. I think that if I were to recommend anywhere in the Bay area to start Yoga and get into it with a group who cares about health, this is it. Plus, they also offer 15 percent discounts to everyone in the class! This is really a sweet program!    Be very thankful to Tony for organizing it and for teaching class the first Sunday of every month. oooooOOOOOOOMMMmmmmmm! ." - Jake C.

Black Yoga Teacher - Tony Eason

Tony Eason

"A Graduate of the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco, Tony Eason has been a student of Yoga for twelve years. As an AIDS LifeCycle cyclist, Tony came to yoga for the benefits of stretching.

His teachings includes the use of yoga props to encourage the ultimate benefit from each posture. Through Iyengar yoga classes, he teaches students to pay attention to the alignment of their bodies, to become aware of the breath, and to control the mind.

Presently, Tony teaches Iyengar yoga classes substitute teaches, and gives yoga seminars at James Howell Studio, Club One, Gold's Gym, and the San Francisco Tennis Club. Cyclist, beginners, and everyone else, are encouraged to attend his classes."

"Peter Lakis...a man...a myth...an 'engager of cores' .  This guy is amazing; I started taking his pilate's class with the intention of checking out this whole 'Pilate' thing.  Is it for real?  A fad?  A cult?  Well, all of my answers flowed to me as seamlessly as the brief one-hour instructor led session…. He could not be a better instructor for those new and feeling awkward.  He gets excited about corrections and nails his stance down while belting out 'Nice Adjustment!'  I mean, I sense his sincerity!  He gets excited about this stuff...he has passion.  Also, he conveys the theory and spirit of the movement with useful imagery.  Example, stretch your head from your shoulders as if you're Katherine Hepburn in "Breakfast at Tiffany".  I've never seen the movie, but rather, I know Katherine and boy, she could turtle that neck waaayyy out." - Scott H.

"This is a great class for those new to yoga or for those who have practiced for years.

Tony is an Iyengar teacher, which stresses proper alignment and holding poses for longer durations. His classes (Tuesdays 6:00 - 7:30pm and Saturdays 10:30 - 12:00 noon) in the Duboce park area are donation based and vary well from week to week. There is always method to the pose progressions and Tony helps students one and one to improve from whatever level you are working from.

I really like Tony's classes because they are a good medium between the phoofy (none of the 'stretch your arms up toward Shiva' business or chanting or anything) and the military boot camp classes (Tony reminds you that yoga is ultimately about calming and stilling the mind, not twisting your body into a pretzel).

Go to his website at http://www.ynottony.com for his class schedule, studio address and much more. He also directs free yoga Sundays at Sports Basement (for the next 6 mos. hopefully) and teaches a Thursday night class at Club One.

"No whispering!!..." Haaahaaa, I've never had so much fun, at a free class no less, given by the one and only Tony yogi... OK, I think he's right I don't want him for a guru, but I like his stress on some fundamentals: breathing, posture, and focus.

Sure I'd go back again... and for free at Sports Basement? OK twist my arm, I mean... my navel :)

"I had the pleasure of taking a yoga class with Tony the other evening. His classes are on a donation basis, so you're not pressured or sucked in to sign on for a bunch of classes. This isn't that kind of place.

If you are a yoga novice and just want to check it out and see if you'd like doing yoga on a more regular basis, Tony is a great teacher. He is funny, compassionate, and believes in pushing people but only to the point of what they can do (don't compare yourself to others, be happy with what you can do).

If you have been doing yoga for a while, Tony's classes build up to more complicated positions during each session.

When I came in earlier this week, there were a couple total beginners that had never taken a class before, some intermediate or occasional yogis, and a few people that have done some form of yoga for many years.

There are only a couple rules in this studio, such as asking questions whenever you feel like asking, answering yes or no questions with yes or no (not some mumbling or sound like uh huh because that could be misinterpreted and one false move and you could snap your neck kind of thing), and if you feel like chatting with your neighbor, you must do so loudly enough that everyone in the class can hear (whispering is often felt as negative even if it's not, but secrets secrets are no fun, so laugh, sing, and be loud if you feel like it)."

"I take a class with Tony 2 sometimes 3x a week depending on life's schedule. He is both supportive and challenging. My practice has grown in the past 2 years with him.  DONATION YOGA rocks. He's not out to get rich, just sharing the love."

"Tony has a wonderful sense of humor.  Is very down to earth, and knows how to conduct a mixed-level class.  He's not one of those teachers who just sits in front of the class and rattles off the asanas.  He has good intuition on helping students at different levels to adjust the asanas based upon their individual expertise and level.  Always walking around the room checking out each students posture.  His donation based yoga classes show the extent of his commitment to keeping yoga available to all. I have done Yoga off and on for almost 15 years. I got out of it after injuring my shoulder doing Bikram Yoga and got back in when I kept having nagging cycling injuries. After 35 you better do Yoga, or something like it because I know you're like me and the aches and pains start.

I found Tony because he does a lot with cycling and Yoga and he really knows his stuff. He's trained in Iyengar yoga (which I have always thought is one of the best styles of Hatha Yoga). Its much more about form and doing the postures right than running you through the same series of postures in a set amount of time.

Tony is awesome. He really knows his stuff and his yoga classes are difficult and challenging but also fun and not too formal. I think Tony is a true yogi, someone who is into the real spiritual quest of life without being religious or a phony baloney wanna be Hindu.

I highly recommend his classes.

If you are interested in Hatha Yoga, I would highly recommend you check out Tony's classes.  He works hard to provide a safe, fun, and challenging atmosphere to further ones Yoga practice.  I have been to about 10 different Yoga studios in town and I must say that Tony is among the most dedicated teacher's around.  Trained at the Iyengar Yoga Institute, he certainly has a great breadth of knowledge and skillfully instructs his students toward a deeper understanding of Yoga.  No hype here - Tony is the real deal.

I can easily say that Tony is the best yoga teacher I have ever had.  I always laugh at least once during his class, which is great because I often find myself in challenging new poses.  His instruction is clear and consistent, he is incredibly kind and always positive, and he is exceedingly generous by offering donation only yoga classes.  My practice has improved incredibly since I started attending his classes.

One other fantastic thing about Tony is that he is completely accommodating to my physical challenges, which has renewed my enthusiasm and passion for yoga.

Oh, and his toenail polish is always fabulous!

Tony Eason is a beautiful soul. I go to his yoga class on Wednesday evenings. I never miss because Tony is a ROCKSTAR of a yoga teacher. That is not to say that he is not humble. Tony is an enlightened soul who leads with his heart. He cares about alignment and works on strengthening the body, on mental focus and flexibility. He continues to challenge me and to push me to be my best. I love Tony! He has helped me to learn to shut out the "little man" and has inspired my yoga practice.

" I've been running a lot the past couple of months and my back started hurting me more and more over time.  Tony showed me a couple of simple Yoga positions that would help my back.  A week after I started doing them, I finished a run with no back pain.

Tony is great.  He worked with me to really focus on my individual needs and what he taught me really works! "

"Tony is an amazing teacher and human being. He is skilled, patient and kind. I have taken yoga , particularly Iyengar yoga , from many instructors over the past 20 years and Tony is the best teacher I've ever had. His teaching incorporates a great sense of timing and rhythm, and his sense of humor helps you through the tough spots. I would unqualifiedly recommend Tony to anyone, and do, on a regular basis."

Tony is a caring and patient yoga teacher to beginners like me, though his yoga class attracts yoga students in all levels.  His instructions are always so clear and assuring that I find myself doing the poses that I have never imagined doing.  I feel lucky that he offers donation based classes in my neighborhood.

Tony is amazing!
I've taken yoga from a number of yoga teachers working in different styles and his class is by far the best experience I've had. I'm stuck with an old neck injury that means I need to be careful about what I do and Tony helps me modify postures as needed.

He creates a welcoming and inclusive environment. He also says there are no medals in yoga. We laugh fairly often in class!
